Why a braces adjustment takes as long as it does

A routine braces adjustment takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and visits come roughly monthly over the 1 to 3 years of treatment. The appointment is short because it follows a set pattern. The ties come off, the wire comes out, the brackets are checked, a new or reshaped wire goes in and fresh ties are placed. An orthodontic assistant often does much of the hands-on work, with the orthodontist examining the teeth, deciding what changes to make and checking the result. The interval between visits is chosen so that each wire has time to do its work before it is changed, which is why coming more often would not speed things up.

When it runs longer

A visit runs past the usual length when something needs repair or a new element is added. Re-bonding a loose bracket, repositioning several brackets, fitting springs or a new appliance, and teaching you a new rubber band pattern all add minutes. Appointments that include progress photos or X-rays are longer. The visits at the two ends of treatment, when braces are first put on and when they are removed, are separate and considerably longer than an adjustment. Overall treatment lengthens when adjustments are missed, brackets are repeatedly broken or elastics are not worn. Your orthodontist can tell you how you are tracking against the original estimate.
