Why a dental bridge takes as long as it does

A bridge is normally completed in two visits of 1 to 2 hours each. The first is the demanding one, because the dentist is preparing two teeth, not one, and they have to be shaped in relation to each other. A bridge is a single rigid piece, so it can only seat if the walls of both anchor teeth are close to parallel, and getting that right takes repeated checking. Then come the impression, a record of your bite and a temporary bridge made at the chair. While the lab builds the bridge you wear the temporary. The second visit is given over to trying the bridge in, refining the fit and bite, and cementing it.

    Numbing both anchor teeth

    Two teeth need anesthetic, which may mean more than one injection if they sit on either side of a wider gap.

    Trimming and aligning the anchors

    Each tooth is reduced and then compared with the other so the bridge has one clear path onto both. Old fillings are replaced with buildups at this stage if needed.

    Impression and bite record

    The impression has to capture both prepared teeth cleanly in one go, along with the gum in the gap. A flaw at either tooth means retaking it.

    A temporary spanning the gap is molded, trimmed around the gum, checked in the bite and cemented with soft cement.

When it runs longer

Longer bridges with more units take more time at both visits. Anchor teeth that need buildups, or a root canal first, add steps or separate appointments. If the missing tooth was extracted recently, many dentists wait for the gum to heal and settle into its final shape before taking the impression, so the false tooth meets the gum properly, and you wear a temporary in the meantime. For long or front bridges the dentist may schedule a try-in of the framework before the porcelain is finished. A bridge that rocks or does not match in color goes back to the lab, which adds a visit.
