Why a custom mouthguard takes as long as it does

A custom mouthguard takes two visits of about 20 to 30 minutes each. The first is for the impression or scan, which is quick and needs no numbing. The lab then makes the guard, and the gap between visits is simply the lab's turnaround. The second visit is the fitting. For a sports guard this is usually brief: the dentist checks that it seats, grips and does not rub. For a night guard the fitting has an extra stage. You bite on thin marking paper with the guard in place, the dentist looks at where your teeth touch it, and the surface is adjusted until the contacts are spread evenly across the arch.
