Why a retainer takes as long as it does

Getting a retainer takes two short visits of about 20 to 30 minutes each. The first is for records: an impression or digital scan of your teeth, which is quick and involves nothing more uncomfortable than a tray of putty or a camera wand. The retainer is then made on a model of your teeth. The second visit is the fitting, where the retainer is tried in, adjusted and explained. When the retainer follows braces, the scan is often folded into the removal appointment, so it may not feel like a separate visit at all. A fixed retainer is the exception to the pattern, since its second visit is a bonding procedure carried out tooth by tooth.

    A digital scan takes a few minutes of moving a wand around the teeth. A putty impression sits in the mouth until it sets.

    Not chair time. A clear tray can be formed quickly on site in some offices. Wire retainers usually go to a lab.

When it runs longer

A bonded retainer takes longer to fit than a removable one, because each tooth has to be kept dry while the wire is attached and the bite is checked afterward. Having both upper and lower retainers made adds a little to each visit. A wire-and-acrylic retainer may need a follow-up to adjust the clasps once you have worn it. If you are replacing a retainer and your teeth have shifted, a fresh scan is needed and the orthodontist may want to discuss options first. Offices that send work to an outside lab have a longer gap between visits than those that make retainers in-house.
